He stated that the Iranian side was aware of the incoming response and had previously requested that the United States refrain from such action. This escalation occurs after a period of relative calm, during which both nations had paused strikes amidst reports of potential diplomatic negotiations—talks that Tehran has officially denied occurred.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed responsibility for targeting a US air base and a command center in Jordan, citing these actions as a response to what they described as the aggression of the American military. Additionally, the IRGC reported that its naval forces struck three oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz, alleging that the vessels ignored warnings and utilized an illegal, unsafe route through the waterway.
This latest military engagement follows a broader period of conflict. Last Friday, President Trump suspended a 13-night bombing campaign that targeted Iranian weapons and military sites, which reportedly resulted in significant casualties. On Tuesday, Centcom confirmed that joint US-Saudi strikes had targeted logistics and weapons sites in eastern Iraq in response to over 30 drone attacks directed by the IRGC within a 72-hour period. While the Iraqi presidency condemned the bombing of the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) bases as a violation of national sovereignty, President Trump maintained that the strikes were coordinated with the Iraqi government.
Amidst the ongoing hostilities, Axios reported on Wednesday that President Trump met with Saudi Defence Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman, who indicated that Saudi Arabia is seeking to de-escalate regional tensions.
