The ongoing dispute between the United States and Türkiye regarding Ankara’s acquisition of the Russian S-400 air defence system is expected to be resolved, according to US Ambassador to Türkiye and Special Envoy for Syria, Tom Barrack. Speaking to reporters on Monday outside the Turkish House in New York City, Barrack emphasized that American and Turkish teams are collaborating "tirelessly" to address both bilateral and regional concerns.
Barrack characterized the current state of relations between the two nations as "closer than ever," noting that both sides maintain a constant dialogue. When questioned specifically about the S-400 issue, he explained that the friction arises from US legislation, such as the Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA), alongside specific requirements related to the ownership and operational status of the Russian-made system. He described the situation as "not a critical issue" but rather a "relationship issue" that is currently being addressed.
Highlighting the broader scope of the partnership, Barrack pointed out that Türkiye possesses a robust defence industry that remains separate from its S-400 acquisition. He expressed optimism regarding the future of bilateral ties, noting that both countries are focused on determining the necessary steps to achieve a "positive outcome." Furthermore, he described the personal relationship between US President Donald Trump and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan as "very strong and appreciative."
These comments were made while President Erdogan was in New York for the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, where he is scheduled to address the General Debate on Tuesday. Earlier reports indicated that a meeting between President Erdogan and President Trump is anticipated on the sidelines of the event.
