Ukraine conducted a widespread drone offensive on Monday, deploying hundreds of unmanned aerial vehicles to strike energy and export infrastructure deep within Russian territory. This ongoing campaign is intended to degrade Moscow's military capabilities and compel the Kremlin to engage in peace negotiations following nearly four-and-a-half years of conflict.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed the effectiveness of these long-range operations in a social media update. He highlighted that an export terminal located roughly 250 kilometres from the front line in the Rostov region was successfully struck. Furthermore, deep strikes hit oil facilities in the Yaroslavl region and the Udmurt Republic, the latter being situated 1,300 kilometres from the Ukrainian border.
The impact of these strikes has been severe. Russian officials reported that five people, including a child, were killed in Rostov, where the attacks ignited fires in an apartment block and various warehouses. In the Belgorod region, which shares a border with Ukraine, local authorities stated that 12 people, including two children, were wounded and an apartment building was set ablaze. Additionally, Robert Brovdi, commander of Ukraine's Unmanned Systems Forces, noted that Ukrainian drones have targeted 14 energy facilities in Russian-occupied Crimea over the last three days.
These sustained operations have resulted in widespread power outages and fuel shortages, causing unprecedented disruption to daily life for civilians in Russia. While Kyiv has previously targeted locations as far as the Urals and Siberia, such deep strikes resulting in fatalities remain relatively rare.
Simultaneously, Russian forces continued their own long-range strikes across Ukraine. According to regional authorities, at least nine people were killed in Russian attacks over the past day. In the Zaporizhzhia region, where 45 settlements near the frontline were targeted, two people were killed and 13 were injured. A 40-year-old woman was killed in Kharkiv, while a rare daytime attack on a supermarket in Chernihiv resulted in two deaths, including a child. The Ukrainian Air Force reported that Russia launched 147 long-range strike drones overnight, of which 123 were intercepted or jammed, while 21 drones successfully hit seven different locations. According to the United Nations, last month marked the deadliest period for Ukrainian civilians since April 2022 as Russia intensified its long-range bombardment of towns and cities.
