Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held a meeting with the newly appointed UK Prime Minister, Andy Burnham, on Monday. The discussions took place aboard the aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth, which is currently docked at a British naval base in Portsmouth on the south coast of England.
During the visit, Prime Minister Burnham emphasized the importance of the meeting, stating that Zelenskyy was the first leader he had welcomed in person since assuming office. Burnham told the Ukrainian president that the gesture was intentional, designed to convey a clear message that the UK stands fully with Ukraine. He committed to honoring every pledge the United Kingdom has previously made to the nation.
A significant portion of the talks focused on Ukraine's urgent requirement for ballistic missile interceptors. Burnham noted that they discussed how these defensive systems are vital for protecting critical national infrastructure, particularly as Ukraine prepares for the winter months. Russia has been conducting an extensive campaign targeting power facilities, gas infrastructure, and logistics networks throughout the year. The Prime Minister stated that the UK has identified specific actions to follow up on with international partners following these discussions.
Cooperation on defense manufacturing was another key agenda item. Zelenskyy mentioned on X that the two leaders addressed joint defense production, building upon an existing agreement between the nations regarding drone development. Ahead of the meeting, the Ukrainian president expressed his hope for the establishment of a major manufacturing facility in the UK.
In addition to their formal talks, the two leaders met with more than 200 Ukrainian military personnel. These troops are currently participating in a three-week training program in Britain, which is aimed at enhancing combat capabilities and improving mine countermeasure operations in the Black Sea. Zelenskyy is scheduled to continue his diplomatic tour with a visit to US President Donald Trump in Washington on Tuesday.
“It is intended to send a very clear message: we are with Ukraine 100%, I am personally with you 100%, and I will honor every commitment this country has made to Ukraine in full.”
Burnham said they had “talked at length” about Kyiv's need for more interceptors to shoot down Russian ballistic missiles, “particularly in terms of Ukraine protecting critical national infrastructure during the winters.”
