Typhoon Bavi arrived in China’s eastern Zhejiang province late Saturday night, prompting authorities to evacuate more than 1.7 million people. While the storm is expected to move inland toward the northwest, officials anticipate its intensity will gradually weaken over time.
Before reaching the Chinese mainland, the storm caused significant disruption across the region. In the Philippines, where the weather system originated as a super typhoon near Guam and the Northern Marianas, at least 17 people were killed by flooding and landslides. According to the country’s meteorological agency, 10 deaths occurred in the town of Malapatan, Sarangani province, five in Lanao del Sur, and two in Bukidnon. An additional nine people remain missing in Mindanao, while at least four others sustained injuries. The storm has affected over 500,000 people and forced more than 11,000 residents from their homes.
Taiwan also faced severe impacts, with DW correspondent Rik Glauert reporting that the storm brought life to a near standstill. Authorities evacuated over 10,000 people considered at risk of landslides, while more than 150,000 households lost power. The government cancelled over 1,100 domestic and international flights and closed schools and offices for two days. Despite being downgraded from a super typhoon, the storm battered Taipei with over a meter of rainfall and winds exceeding 100 kph, resulting in toppled trees, damaged power lines, and swollen rivers.
In Japan, the Sakishima island chain in Okinawa prefecture experienced sustained winds of 144 kilometers (90 miles) per hour. The severe weather led to the cancellation of 345 flights, the suspension of ferry services, and power outages affecting more than 24,000 households.
