A 34-year-old woman and her seven-year-old niece who died in a house fire in Grangetown, near Middlesbrough, have been named by their family as tributes pour in. Natalie McDonald and her niece Valentina Foster, also known as Tina, lost their lives in the blaze during the early hours of Wednesday. Police have since launched a murder investigation, arresting two men in connection with the tragic incident.
Natalie’s mother, Lisa Kirton, paid emotional tribute to her daughter, describing her as "a beautiful soul, who would have done anything for anybody." Speaking to reporters, Kirton remembered Natalie as "lovely, bright and bubbly," adding that "everybody loved her." She also shared that seven-year-old Valentina had been staying with the family for the summer holidays. "She was a cute little kid," Kirton said. "I can't believe it, seven years old – it's just a disgrace."
The fire has left several others injured. According to Cleveland Police, a 48-year-old woman remains in a critical condition in the hospital, while three other individuals suffered injuries that are not life-threatening. Kirton revealed that Natalie's 15-year-old daughter and a friend managed to survive the fire by escaping through an upstairs window.
Local residents described desperate attempts to help the occupants as the fire took hold. Ellie, a 20-year-old neighbor, spoke of the intense heat coming from the property. "The entire house was scorching," she said. "I couldn't get near the front of the house, it was that hot." Ellie recounted holding the hand of a crying woman who had jumped from an upstairs window, staying by her side until emergency services arrived. Another neighbor reported that her daughter heard shouting, screaming, and dogs barking early in the morning.
Emergency services responded in force, with Cleveland Fire Brigade dispatching six fire engines and its Incident Command Unit. The fire was successfully extinguished by 13:30 BST, though one engine remained on "proactive standby" at the scene. Road closures were implemented, and officials advised the public to avoid the area. Northern Powergrid workers were seen on site alongside police officers guarding a cordon, near where community members have left floral tributes.
Two men, aged 23 and 31, have been arrested on suspicion of murder and remain in police custody. Cleveland Police and the fire service are conducting a joint investigation into the incident. Authorities stated they are "keeping an open mind and cannot rule out any links to wider organised crime at this time."
The tragedy occurred just two miles from the site of a fatal crash on the A66 on Saturday morning, which resulted in the deaths of five young men and two police officers. Redcar MP Anna Turley expressed her deep condolences, noting that the local community has faced a "profound amount of heartbreak over the past few weeks."
Redcar and Cleveland Local Policing Commander Supt Emily Harrison stated that police are working diligently to "establish the circumstances of exactly what has happened." She encouraged anyone with information or concerns to speak with officers, noting that patrols have been increased to reassure the local community. Specialist officers are currently supporting the families of the victims.
