In a significant electoral upset, US Representative Andy Ogles has been defeated in Tennessee's Republican primary by challenger Charlie Hatcher. The Associated Press called the race for Hatcher on Thursday, with the former state agriculture commissioner securing 53.3 percent of the vote compared to 46.8 percent for Ogles, with 95 percent of precincts reporting.
This outcome marks a rare defeat for a candidate endorsed by former President Donald Trump. While Hatcher did not receive an endorsement from Trump, he campaigned as a supporter of the former president while emphasizing his farming background and the backing of Tennessee Governor Bill Lee. Reflecting on his victory, Hatcher told The Associated Press that his message of working like a farmer to serve others had resonated with voters.
The primary contest was held under Tennessee's newly redrawn congressional map, which was approved by the Republican-controlled state legislature following the US Supreme Court's decision to weaken federal Voting Rights Act protections. Republicans currently hold eight of the state's nine congressional seats and are aiming to capture all nine in the upcoming November midterm elections. Hatcher is now set to face Democrat Chaz Molder, who won his party's primary with 40.9 percent of the vote in a crowded field.
Ogles’ campaign faced notable controversy leading up to the vote, particularly regarding a social media post on X that was widely condemned as Islamophobic. In the post, Ogles stated, "Muslims don't belong in American society. Pluralism is a lie." The remarks drew sharp criticism from Democratic lawmakers and advocacy groups, including the US Council of Muslim Organizations. Osama Jamal, the council's secretary-general, condemned the statements, asserting that hate and discrimination have no place in America.
