President Trump arrived in Dublin, Ireland, on Saturday to commence a weekend visit that includes high-level diplomatic discussions and attendance at a professional golf tournament. During his stay, the president is scheduled for separate meetings with Irish President Catherine Connolly and Taoiseach Micheál Martin.
The diplomatic itinerary includes a planned address to U.S. and Irish business leaders at the official residence of the U.S. ambassador in Dublin. Following these engagements, the president is set to travel to his oceanfront golf club located in Doonbeg, on the western side of the country, to watch the Irish Open.
Security measures have been intensified across the capital, with police establishing a cordon around the 1,750-acre Phoenix Park. This area serves as the site for several of the president's scheduled activities, including his meeting with the taoiseach at the government’s Farmleigh state guesthouse, a visit to the president’s residence at Áras an Uachtaráin, and a stop at Deerfield, the U.S. ambassador's residence.
The visit has drawn criticism from various groups. A coalition of left-leaning opposition parties, anti-military groups, environmentalists, and pro-Palestinian organizations have planned demonstrations in Dublin for Saturday. Individual residents have also expressed frustration, with taxi driver Christopher Fox stating, “He's causing mayhem in this city because he wants to go down to Doonbeg and play golf. The world's in turmoil and this fella's down playing golf.” University student Mina Petrovski described the government's welcome as “shameful,” citing the president’s “attitudes towards women, towards immigrants, towards minority communities in general.”
The president’s attendance at the Irish Open aligns with his frequent participation in high-profile sporting events, often at clubs he owns. His family business has previously hosted professional golf tournaments this year at his properties in Doral, Florida, and Bedminster, New Jersey. The Irish Open marks the second European Tour event held at a Trump property this year, following the Nexo Championship which took place last month at the president’s golf course in Aberdeen, Scotland.
Some residents expressed annoyance over the disruption.
