Surrey strengthened their position for the Metro Bank One-Day Cup knockout stages with a commanding 95-run victory over Kent at the Kia Oval. After being put in to bat, Surrey posted a total of 286 before successfully bowling out the visitors for 191 in front of a crowd of nearly 7,000 spectators.
Ryan Patel spearheaded the Surrey innings with a dominant 73 off 70 balls, including 13 fours and a six. He shared a 116-run opening partnership with Dom Sibley, who contributed 53. Rory Burns also provided momentum with a quick 33 from 18 balls. Although Surrey reached 191 for 2 in the 34th over, Kent’s bowlers mounted a spirited comeback. Matt Milnes led the resistance, taking 3 for 32 from his 10 overs and dismissing Tom Lawes, Ralphie Albert, and Josh Blake. Ekansh Singh also claimed the wicket of Ollie Sykes, who had smashed consecutive sixes off Matt Parkinson, as Surrey’s tail struggled to add more than 93 runs from the final eight wickets.
Kent’s reply faltered early against a disciplined Surrey attack. Dan Worrall set the tone with an outstanding opening spell of six overs, conceding only 10 runs and bowling three maidens. Tom Lawes, returning from Hundred franchise duty, claimed 4 for 40, while Tommy Ealham impressed with 3 for 37. Lawes struck early to remove Ben Dawkins, with Burns taking a sharp catch. Ealham later dismissed Sam Northeast, stumped for 24, while Adam Thomas added two wickets by removing Chris Benjamin and Harry Finch.
Despite a 86-run sixth-wicket stand between Jaydn Denly, who scored 51, and Ekansh Singh, who added 38, Kent remained well behind the required pace. Once Denly edged behind and Ekansh was caught at midwicket, the match ended rapidly. This result marks Surrey’s fourth win in six Group A matches, while Kent now faces a near-impossible path to the quarter-finals with three defeats from their six games.
