A militant attack on a security checkpoint in northern Pakistan resulted in the deaths of at least seven police officers, according to local authorities. The incident took place on Wednesday evening in the Hangu district, situated within the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. District Police Officer Tariq Habib confirmed the casualties and noted that an additional 22 police personnel sustained injuries, with some currently listed in critical condition at a local hospital.
In the aftermath of the assault, security forces initiated a clearance operation in the region. While eight terrorists were reported killed during the clash, no group has yet claimed responsibility for the violence. This incident follows a similar attack just days earlier in the nearby Tank district, where militants used an explosives-laden vehicle to strike a security post, resulting in 15 deaths including soldiers, police, and government personnel. In that instance, the military reported that 12 militants were killed.
The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, which shares a border with Afghanistan, has faced a significant increase in violent activity attributed to the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). The TTP is considered a close ally of the Afghan Taliban, who regained power in Afghanistan in 2021. The surge in violence has strained relations between Islamabad and Kabul, with Pakistan accusing the Afghan Taliban government of allowing attacks to originate from their territory. The Afghan authorities have denied these allegations, though the tensions have led to an armed conflict and prompted Pakistan to conduct air strikes against terrorist targets within Afghan borders.
