KATHMANDU, Nepal — An avalanche struck Mount Himlung in north central Nepal on Sunday during severe weather conditions, killing at least two individuals and leaving 12 others missing, according to officials.
The incident occurred on Mount Himlung, a 7,126-meter (23,380-foot) peak located in the Manang District. Mukti Prasad Khanal, the chief government administrator for Manang District, confirmed the details of the avalanche.
All of the victims, both those killed and those still missing, were identified as Nepali nationals. Rescue teams successfully airlifted two bodies and 10 survivors from the mountain by helicopter to a nearby town. Search operations are slated to recommence at first light on Monday.
Authorities had previously issued warnings regarding severe weather expected across the Himalayan nation throughout the weekend. Nepal has experienced rainfall since Thursday, with northern mountain regions receiving snowfall.
This event comes as Nepal continues to recover from devastating floods in August, which inundated several villages, claiming over 1,400 lives and leaving nearly 6,000 people missing.
Rescuers brought two bodies and 10 survivors down from the mountain by helicopter to a nearby town, Khanal said.
