The movement against the leader of world soccer's governing body has gained momentum, as both Serbia and Sweden have officially revoked their support for Gianni Infantino’s upcoming re-election bid. These withdrawals follow a similar move by the Football Association of Wales, which was the first national federation to formally distance itself from the FIFA President.
The Football Association of Serbia announced its decision to withdraw support, noting that while they had provided a written endorsement for Mr. Infantino on May 25 of this year, recent developments have forced a change in position. The federation stated that after a careful review of events that have seriously damaged the reputation of both FIFA and its President, they concluded that this is the only logical and rational course of action.
Similarly, the Swedish Football Association (SvFF) confirmed its decision during an extraordinary board meeting held on Monday. The federation explained that its choice to oppose Mr. Infantino in the next election follows a long-term assessment of internal developments and the organization's leadership. According to the Swedish federation, the decision is rooted in recurring shortcomings regarding transparency, governance, and management, leading to a total loss of trust in Mr. Infantino’s leadership.
The growing backlash follows widespread criticism of the FIFA President, largely fueled by his unsuccessful initiative to sell a portion of the World Cup to private investors.
