A devastating road accident involving multiple vehicles in South Africa’s Western Cape Province has claimed the lives of at least 21 people, national traffic authorities confirmed on Monday. The incident occurred on the N1 highway at approximately 11:30 p.m. on Sunday night.
According to the Road Traffic Management Corporation, the collision took place between the towns of Prince Albert and Leeu-Gamka, a location situated roughly 380 kilometers (236 miles) east of Cape Town. Muneera Allie, a spokesperson for the provincial transport department known as Western Cape Mobility, verified the timing and location of the tragedy.
Preliminary findings from local authorities suggest that the crash involved two minibus taxis and a third vehicle. Officials believe the two taxis collided head-on, after which the additional vehicle crashed into them. In addition to the 21 fatalities, Western Cape Mobility reported that several other individuals sustained serious injuries.
Minibus taxis serve as the primary mode of public transportation for a significant portion of South Africa’s population. These vehicles are frequently involved in fatal road collisions across the country.
