Investigators looking into the death of 78-year-old former MP and MEP Ann Widdecombe have stated that there is currently no evidence to suggest the incident was politically motivated. The Devon and Cornwall Police force confirmed that they are not seeking any other individuals in connection with the case following the arrest of a 28-year-old white British man in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, on Saturday.
The arrest was executed shortly after 21:00 BST by officers representing Counter Terrorism Police North East and South Yorkshire Police, acting on behalf of the Devon and Cornwall force. Ms. Widdecombe was discovered with serious injuries at her residence in Haytor, Devon, on Thursday.
Assistant Chief Constable Matt Longman noted that while the investigation remains active, officers are keeping an “open-minded” approach regarding a potential motive. Furthermore, authorities have indicated that there is no perceived threat to the wider public at this time.
