Police investigating the death of former Conservative minister Ann Widdecombe believe the 78-year-old was attacked nearly 24 hours before her body was discovered. The victim was found with serious injuries at her home in Haytor, Devon, at 11:40 BST on Thursday.
According to Devon and Cornwall Police, the incident is believed to have taken place on Wednesday at approximately 12:30 BST. Officials have stated that their ongoing enquiries are moving at a significant pace as they search for a suspect, who is currently described as a white male.
The investigation saw a development on Saturday morning when police announced that a 26-year-old white British man, who had been arrested the previous day on suspicion of murdering the former MP, has been released from custody. Authorities confirmed he is no longer part of the investigation.
Assistant Chief Constable Matt Longman emphasized that the primary focus remains identifying those responsible and ensuring all evidence is thoroughly examined. He noted that detectives are conducting numerous enquiries and deploying all necessary resources to determine the exact circumstances of the event. Longman also issued an appeal to the public, urging anyone with information—no matter how insignificant it may seem—to come forward and contact the police.
