North Korea launched a possible ballistic missile toward the sea on Wednesday, according to Japan's Defense Ministry. This marks the second instance of such weapons testing by the North in less than a week. The Japanese Defense Ministry confirmed that the suspected weapon landed in the water.
Reports from South Korea's military, relayed through the Yonhap news agency, indicated that an unidentified projectile was fired off the country's east coast. This latest test follows a short-range ballistic missile launch detected last week by South Korea, the United States, and Japan, which was the North's first such activity since late June.
The timing of the launch is significant, occurring just two days after the United States and South Korea announced plans to initiate their annual large-scale military exercises next week. Known as Ulchi Freedom Shield, these drills are designed to enhance readiness against potential threats from North Korea. However, Pyongyang frequently condemns these joint training sessions, viewing them as rehearsals for an invasion, and has a history of responding to such exercises with aggressive rhetoric and provocative weapons tests.
As of now, North Korea has not issued an official confirmation regarding the launch. The country typically releases details concerning its weapons testing activity one day after the event occurs.
