Hailing from a prominent footballing family, Gustavo is the son of Cape Verde international defender Fernando Varela. The striker spent the previous season gaining experience on loan at the Portuguese club Gil Vicente. His arrival follows a period of significant activity for Monza, who also recently added Ricardo Mangas to their squad on loan from Sporting CP, a deal that includes an option to purchase the player for €1.5 million.
