Moldova’s parliament officially elected businessman and investor Vasile Tofan as prime minister on Tuesday, placing the political newcomer in charge of steering the former Soviet republic’s ongoing efforts to join the European Union. The 44-year-old Tofan, who is supported by President Maia Sandu and her Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS), secured the position with a vote of 53 to 21, while 21 members abstained in the 101-seat legislative body.
Tofan’s appointment follows the sudden resignation of former Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu three weeks ago. Munteanu stepped down after eight months in office, stating only that he could no longer fulfill his mandate in alignment with his personal principles and beliefs. This departure automatically triggered the resignation of the entire government, prompting President Sandu to nominate Tofan and emphasize the need for a unified and robust team to meet the nation's EU integration goals.
The new prime minister brings an extensive academic and professional background to the role. Until recently, Tofan served as a senior partner at the Ukraine-based investment firm Horizon Capital. He holds a master's degree in business administration from Harvard Business School, alongside bachelor's and master's degrees in public administration earned from Erasmus University in the Netherlands.
Moldova, a country landlocked between Ukraine to the east and Romania to the west, has increasingly moved toward Western integration since gaining independence in 1991. This shift has positioned the nation as a geopolitical focal point between Russia and Europe. As part of its formal accession process, Moldova and Ukraine initiated negotiations last month on five chapters regarding EU values, including the rule of law and democratic institutions. Furthermore, both nations opened a second cluster of negotiations last week, which covers security, defense policies, foreign relations, trade, and humanitarian aid.
She tasked Tofan with proposing a new cabinet after the previous ministers were forced to resign.
