Speedster Mayank Yadav has opened up about the mental and physical challenges he faced during a difficult two-year injury layoff, crediting his desire to represent India as the primary source of his motivation. Speaking after his match-winning performance in the first T20I against Zimbabwe in Harare, where he claimed 2/18, Yadav reflected on the toll that persistent back injuries took on his early career.
The fast bowler, who is currently 22 or 23 years old, admitted that the timing of his injuries was particularly distressing. He missed a significant portion of the 2025 IPL season and struggled with recurring back issues after appearing in only two matches. Following surgery, he worked his way back through India A warmup fixtures and a stint with the Lucknow Super Giants in the 2026 IPL season, though he remained wicketless during that tournament with an economy rate of 11.37. Despite these setbacks, the childhood dream of playing for his country kept him focused on returning to form.
In the opening T20I against Zimbabwe, Yadav made an immediate impact by dismissing Brian Bennett with his very first ball, followed by the wicket of Dion Myers in the fifth over. He credited the victory to a team effort, noting that he actively shared tactical information regarding the pitch conditions with fellow pacers Ashok Sharma and Prince Yadav. According to Mayank, the trio focused on how to best attack the opposition after establishing a strong position in the first six overs.
The match also served as a milestone for Shreyas Iyer, marking his first victory as Indian captain after previous attempts in Ireland and England. Mayank expressed his appreciation for the freedom he felt under Iyer’s leadership, highlighting the captain's confidence in his bowling plans. He noted that he felt comfortable executing his own strategies, with Iyer providing support and advice when necessary. India is now looking to build on this momentum in the second T20I, scheduled for Saturday, July 25, at the same venue.
