Matt Short made a triumphant return to the Welsh Fire lineup, steering his side to a four-wicket victory over Southern Brave at Sophia Gardens. Having missed the previous win against Birmingham Phoenix due to a minor injury, Short slotted back in at the top of the order and anchored the chase with an unbeaten 60. The win marks the team's fourth victory in five matches, allowing them to keep pace with Trent Rockets at the top of the standings.
Reflecting on the conditions, Short described the pitch as "spicy," noting that it provided significant assistance to the seam bowlers. "It was tough early and it was a pretty spicy wicket with some quick bowlers," Short said. "It was nice to bat second and get a bit of dew and skid off the wicket. They came hard with a Test-match length but the shine wears off and it gets a bit easier. When we bowled, our guys hit the right length and let the ball do the talking."
The Southern Brave struggled throughout their innings, posting 115 for 8—their lowest-ever total in The Hundred. Welsh Fire’s seamers were dominant from the start, with Chris Woakes and Sam Cook reducing the visitors to 2 for 2 within seven balls as Jamie Smith and Ben McKinney edged behind to Phil Salt. Sam Cook was particularly impressive, finishing with figures of 3-14. After the early collapse, Rachin Ravindra dismissed Tristan Stubbs and Moeen Ali in consecutive balls, with Joe Root taking the catch to remove the latter.
Marcus Stoinis provided the only real resistance for the Brave, striking a 35-ball half-century before falling to Cook. Late efforts from David Miller and a first-ball six from Jofra Archer were not enough to lift the total. Short, who bowled the final over, claimed Miller's wicket to cap off a strong bowling performance.
In the chase, Jofra Archer gave the Brave hope by removing Phil Salt with his first delivery. However, Short and Joe Root stabilized the innings, building a 60-run partnership off 48 balls before Root was caught by McKinney off Chris Jordan. Despite the departures of Ravindra and Jordan Cox, Tom Kohler-Cadmore provided the necessary support to Short, who reached his 50 off 37 balls with a scoop shot off Archer, ultimately guiding Welsh Fire to a clinical win.
