Beppe Marotta: Inter Cannot Compete With Premier League Spending

Inter President Beppe Marotta has issued a clear warning regarding the club’s financial strategy, stating that the Nerazzurri cannot hope to bridge the economic distance to the Premier League by engaging in massive spending. Speaking to Globo TV during the team's pre-season tour in Australia, the executive emphasized that the club must adopt a different approach to remain competitive.

It has been a difficult summer for the Italian champions, who have missed out on key targets such as Marco Palestra, who moved to Chelsea, and Anan Khalaili, who failed a medical examination after being poised to join from Union Saint-Gilloise. Marotta acknowledged the current reality of the transfer market, noting that while Serie A was the global reference point in the 1980s and 90s, the financial landscape has since shifted significantly.

"We cannot think of bridging that distance by spending crazy amounts of money," Marotta stated. Instead, he argued that the club's response must be rooted in "creativity, competence and motivation." He added that the belief that the highest spender automatically wins is contrary to the spirit of sport, suggesting that success should be built on values, effective management, and the collective efforts of staff and players.

Marotta, who transitioned from general manager to President following the takeover by Oaktree from Suning, credited a former mentor for his leadership philosophy. He explained that a president’s fundamental rights are to select the people they work with and to define the values of the club. These principles, he said, guide his decision-making as he works in sync with the new owners on major initiatives, including the development of a new stadium aimed at modernizing the club.

Regarding the upcoming season, Marotta maintained that Inter’s ambitions remain unchanged. "Today the balance has shifted and the economic gap is evident," he noted, reiterating that the club cannot think of bridging that distance by spending crazy amounts of money. Despite a challenging Champions League campaign last year, the club enters every competition aiming for the maximum result. He concluded that Inter is a club historically accustomed to winning, and that every victory is the product of passion, struggle, a strong work ethic, and a sense of belonging. "You have to build a team with values, making the most of management, coaches, staff and players."
