Manchester City has completed the signing of Argentine goalkeeper Rulli from Marseille. The 34-year-old is set to take on the role of backup goalkeeper, serving behind Italian international Gianluigi Donnarumma at the Etihad Stadium. This transfer marks a return to Manchester for Rulli, who previously spent the 2016/17 season at the club, although he did not make a first-team appearance during that tenure.
Reflecting on the move, Rulli stated that the opportunity was one he felt compelled to take. He noted that everyone he consulted regarding Manchester City emphasized the club's high standards, making the decision an easy one. His stated focus is now on training diligently, integrating with the staff and players, and performing at his peak level.
Rulli brings significant experience to the squad, having earned eight caps for Argentina. He was a member of the national squad that secured victory in the 2022 World Cup and the 2024 Copa America, and he participated in the recent World Cup final where Argentina fell to Spain. Throughout his career, he has played for various European clubs including Montpellier, Ajax, Villarreal, and Real Sociedad. He is notably remembered for scoring a penalty in the 2021 Europa League final for Villarreal against Manchester United, followed by a save against David de Gea to clinch the 11-10 shootout victory.
The transfer comes as Marseille faces a period of financial restructuring. The club is currently navigating a 10 million euro fine for failing to meet UEFA break-even targets and must sell players to balance its books. Furthermore, Marseille’s fifth-place finish in Ligue 1 for the 2025-2026 season means they will miss out on Champions League football. Rulli's departure follows that of defender Facundo Medina, who joined Bayer Leverkusen on Tuesday. Previously, Marseille also parted ways with high earners including forward Mason Greenwood, who moved to Fenerbahce, and striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who transferred to Deportivo La Coruña.
