Liberian authorities have executed one of the country's largest drug seizures, confiscating nearly four tonnes of cocaine with an estimated street value of $317.7 million, or approximately €279.1 million. The operation took place on the road leading to Roberts International Airport, located roughly 30 kilometres from the capital, Monrovia.
During the raid, investigators recovered approximately 3,971 kilograms of processed plates of suspected cocaine. The Liberian National Police released photos showing a large open-bed truck carrying what appeared to be bags of suspected drugs and other evidence following Tuesday's raid. Two foreign nationals were taken into custody following the operation.
The country's attorney general and justice minister stated that the significant seizure has exposed a highly sophisticated, well-funded, and complex narcotics trafficking network operating within the region. This incident follows a previous major drug bust at the same airport in June, where authorities intercepted 237.6 kilograms of cocaine hidden inside commercial cargo, an event that resulted in charges against five individuals and a logistics company.
In response to the discovery, Liberian President Joseph Boakai declared his intent to expose and destroy the networks fueling the nation's drug trade. He announced that a coordinated investigation is underway to ensure that every individual found responsible for these criminal activities is held fully accountable under the law.
