After weeks of widespread speculation involving teams such as the Golden State Warriors, Miami Heat, and Cleveland Cavaliers, NBA star LeBron James has officially announced his decision to join the Philadelphia 76ers. According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, the veteran forward signed a two-year, $8 million contract with the organization, which includes a player option for the second year.
The move was met with immediate enthusiasm from Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro. To commemorate the arrival of the four-time champion, the Governor utilized his platform on X to declare July 24 as “LeBron James Day.” In his post, Shapiro expressed his excitement as a die-hard Sixers fan, stating, “By the power vested in me as the Governor of the great Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and a die-hard Sixers fan… I hereby proclaim today to be LEBRON JAMES DAY. Welcome to the City of Brotherly Love, @KingJames.”
This political gesture drew a biting response from Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy. While acknowledging he might participate in the festivities, Portnoy criticized the city’s reaction to the signing. “SHUT UP!!!!! This once proud city bending over backwards for grandpa! How many actual Philly athletes have days named after them? Mark my words Im gonna come celebrate Lebron day every year in philly moving forward to remind them of the great philly athlete of them all!!!” he posted.
The addition of James is expected to bolster Philadelphia’s championship aspirations. He joins a roster that includes Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, VJ Edgecombe, and Jaylen Brown, the latter of whom was acquired via trade with the Boston Celtics. Following the acquisition of Brown, the 76ers were already viewed as a top contender in the Eastern Conference.
In a lengthy post on X, James reflected on his decision-making process, noting that he spent time evaluating his continued passion for the sport. “This is my last decision. I’m not going for money. I’m not going for family. What am I really playing for at this point?” he wrote, confirming he still has a deep love for the game. James expressed excitement about playing for a new fanbase in his 24th season. He also took the opportunity to thank Los Angeles and Miami, while reiterating that he considers Cleveland his “forever home.”
