The Los Angeles Knight Riders have advanced to the Major League Cricket final after a seven-run victory against the San Francisco Unicorns. The win was secured despite a valiant unbeaten 94-run effort by Matthew Short, which ultimately fell just short of the target.
The match was highlighted by a tournament-record 15-ball half-century from Rovman Powell. Entering the game late in the 17th over, Powell provided a massive late-innings boost by striking four consecutive sixes off Haris Rauf in the 19th over, followed by two more sixes against Xavier Bartlett in the final over. His performance complemented a strong 96-run second-wicket partnership between Andre Russell and Colin Munro, who contributed 51 off 44 balls. Russell, playing in his 600th T20 match, also scored 62 off 50 balls.
The San Francisco Unicorns faced a disastrous start to their chase when Sunil Narine dismissed both openers, Lhuan-dre Pretorius and Finn Allen, for ducks within the first three balls. However, a 152-run partnership between Matthew Short and Sanjay Krishnamurthi put the Unicorns back in contention, leaving them needing 36 runs from the final three overs.
The momentum shifted back to the Knight Riders when Shadley van Schalkwyk claimed the wicket of Krishnamurthi. In the penultimate over, Russell successfully kept both Short and Aaron Hardie from scoring any boundaries. Despite Hassan Khan hitting a six to bring the required target down to nine runs off the final two deliveries, the Unicorns could not overhaul the 187-run target set by LAKR.
The San Francisco Unicorns will receive another opportunity to qualify for the final when they compete in the second Eliminator this Thursday.
