The potential trade of Kawhi Leonard to the Toronto Raptors has hit a significant roadblock as the NBA continues its investigation into the LA Clippers. The proposed deal, which would send Leonard to Toronto in exchange for Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick, unprotected first-round picks in 2031 and 2033, a 2027 first-round pick swap, and two future second-round selections, remains unfinalized.
At the center of the league's inquiry are allegations that the Clippers improperly utilized an additional $28 million in off-the-books endorsement money to circumvent salary cap regulations. This investigation has created a state of uncertainty for the Raptors, who have been forced to evaluate whether they are willing to accept the potential risks associated with the outcome of the NBA's probe.
ESPN's Ramona Shelburne reported that the Raptors were given a choice regarding the risk of fallout for Leonard once the investigation concludes. Shelburne noted that if the league cannot provide 100% certainty that Leonard will not face repercussions, the decision on whether to proceed rests with Toronto. She further suggested that there is a possibility Leonard could remain with the Clippers for the 2026-27 season if the trade fails to materialize, an outcome the Clippers appear prepared to accept given that their primary conflict with the star involves contract extension negotiations.
Despite these complications, the Toronto Raptors issued a statement on Thursday clarifying their position. The team confirmed that the NBA league office informed them they would assume the risk of any potential impact on Leonard resulting from the ongoing investigation. The franchise emphasized that they are eager to bring Leonard back, viewing him as a vital component of their championship aspirations. Should the trade be completed, it would mark Leonard's second stint with the Raptors, having previously led the franchise to its first championship during the 2018-19 season before joining the Clippers.
