Justin Langer has dismissed reports linking him to the England Test coaching vacancy, confirming that he has not received any communication from the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB). The former Australia coach, who served in the role from 2018 to 2022, stated on the Stick to Cricket podcast that he has not heard from anyone at the organization, labeling the ongoing speculation as mere rumors and paper talk.
Although Langer maintains a long-standing relationship with ECB chief executive Richard Gould, dating back to their time at Somerset in the late 2000s, he is not among the candidates contacted by England’s managing director, Rob Key. While Langer previously expressed caution about the prospect of coaching England in a speech four years ago, he noted in the podcast that he would consider such a high-profile opportunity if it were presented, acknowledging that the England, Australia, and India head coaching roles are among the most significant in the sport. He emphasized, however, that such discussions remain entirely hypothetical.
The search for a new coach follows the departure of Brendon McCullum from the Test team. McCullum will continue in his capacity as the white-ball coach as England transitions to a split-coaching structure. Langer suggested that the incoming Test coach will need to establish a clear vision and work effectively alongside McCullum while ensuring they surround themselves with the right support staff to navigate inevitable early challenges.
Currently based in the UK to coach in The Hundred, Langer is also the head coach of the Lucknow Super Giants and Manchester Super Giants. He faces pressure to perform following a difficult IPL season where his Lucknow team finished at the bottom of the table, though his Manchester side has seen a positive start with two wins in three matches. Other names frequently linked to the England vacancy include Stephen Fleming, Richard Dawson, Jonathan Trott, and Tom Moody, while Marcus Trescothick is considered a potential interim option for the upcoming Test series against Pakistan starting August 19. Andy Flower, previously viewed as an early front-runner, has officially ruled himself out of contention, citing satisfaction with his current roles at Royal Challengers Bengaluru and London Spirit.
