Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is reportedly part of an investment group looking to acquire a stake of slightly more than 30 percent in the Premier League club Liverpool. The consortium is being led by businessman Amit Bhatia and includes Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin.
Financial estimates suggest that the proposed transaction would value the football club at approximately $6 billion, which would mark one of the most significant financial deals in the history of the sport. The parties involved possess substantial personal wealth, with Bezos estimated to have a fortune exceeding $280 billion, while Saverin is reportedly worth more than $32 billion. Amit Bhatia, the son-in-law of Indian steel billionaire Lakshmi Mittal, previously held a stake in the Championship side Queens Park Rangers.
Fenway Sports Group (FSG), the current owners of Liverpool, confirmed last month that the consortium led by Bhatia had expressed interest in a strategic minority investment. A spokesperson for FSG stated: “An investment consortium led, managed, and represented by Amit Bhatia has expressed interest in making a strategic minority investment in Liverpool Football Club.”
FSG originally acquired Liverpool for approximately £300 million in 2010 during a period when the club was experiencing significant financial difficulties. Under the ownership of FSG, which also maintains control of the Boston Red Sox and the Pittsburgh Penguins, the club has secured two Premier League titles and a sixth Champions League trophy.
