On Thursday, Sri Lanka Cricket and the Innovative Production Group (IPG) announced the termination of the franchise rights for the Jaffna Kings, a team competing in the Lanka Premier League (LPL). The decision was prompted by the franchisee's failure to meet its financial obligations as stipulated in the franchise agreement. The move occurred mid-tournament, following reports that one team owner was arrested while another had disappeared.
Despite the termination, the team will continue to participate in the tournament without any changes to its squad, match schedule, or the overall format of the competition. All rights previously held by the franchise have reverted to IPG. Together with Sri Lanka Cricket, IPG has assumed full operational control of the team to ensure continuity.
Anil Mohan, CEO of IPG, emphasized that the decision was difficult but necessary to maintain the integrity of the Lanka Premier League and provide stability for players, coaches, partners, and fans. He stated that the organization acted quickly to prevent any disruption to the Jaffna Kings' participation. Furthermore, Mohan assured that all operational matters, including team logistics, staff commitments, and player contracts, are being managed seamlessly. The sixth edition of the LPL, which began on July 17 and is scheduled to conclude on August 8, will proceed as planned. The Jaffna Kings, led by Bhanuka Rajapaksa, have secured two wins in their first three matches this season.
