The search for the next Italy head coach has been forced back to the drawing board following a public outcry regarding Andrea Pirlo. While technical director Paolo Maldini, seen here on July 12, 2020, and advisor Leonardo had previously targeted Pirlo after being turned down by both Carlo Ancelotti and Pep Guardiola, his role as a global brand ambassador for a Russian betting company has made his appointment increasingly unlikely. The situation has created significant tension, with potential threats of legal action should he be selected to lead the Nazionale.
As the federation shifts its focus to alternative candidates, the search has expanded to include experienced figures such as Antonio Conte—who recently stated Romero will be the best defender at the 2026 World Cup—and Roberto Mancini, as well as Stefano Pioli and Raffaele Palladino. Both Conte and Mancini have previously managed the national team, though they may be hesitant to accept a position after initially being passed over in the pecking order. Between the two, Mancini is considered the more eager and cost-effective option.
Other candidates under consideration include Stefano Pioli, who previously enjoyed success alongside Maldini at AC Milan, winning the Scudetto before his departure from Fiorentina last season. Another name in the mix is 42-year-old Raffaele Palladino, pictured on April 27, 2026. A coach known for his emphasis on possession-based football, Palladino gained recognition for his work with Monza, Fiorentina, and Atalanta. He famously helped pull Atalanta out of a difficult position to secure a sixth-place finish in Serie A after taking charge in November 2025. Palladino, who left Atalanta by mutual consent this summer due to a disagreement over future strategy, is seen as a tactical successor in the mold of his mentor, Gian Piero Gasperini.
