Ishan Kishan Reflects on No. 3 Role After Zimbabwe Victory

Ishan Kishan has opened up about his tactical discipline while batting at No. 3, emphasizing that his primary focus is on situational awareness rather than outside expectations. Following a standout performance in the second T20I against Zimbabwe in Harare, where he earned Player of the Match honors, Kishan noted that the team intentionally avoided the urge to chase a massive total after a shaky start.

India found themselves in a difficult position early on, slipping to 29 for 2 within the first three overs. Rather than pushing for an aggressive 250-plus score, Kishan and captain Shreyas Iyer prioritized assessing the pitch conditions and establishing a stable partnership. This measured approach allowed the pair to add 66 runs together, setting the stage for Tilak Varma’s explosive unbeaten 60 off 29 balls, which ultimately propelled India to a total of 219 for 5. India went on to secure a comfortable 90-run victory, clinching the series 2-0 with one game remaining as Zimbabwe were bowled out for 129 in 17.5 overs.

Reflecting on his role, Kishan explained that batting at No. 3 requires a different mindset compared to the opening pair. He stressed that he does not concern himself with external perceptions or the performance of other teammates. Instead, he focuses on being in the moment and determining whether to take risks or build a foundation based on the wicket's behavior. He believes that everyone has their own role within the team, and his job is to play his natural game while ensuring the team remains in a strong position.

Kishan also touched upon the physical toll of India's demanding international schedule. Having traveled from a series against Ireland in June to England for five T20Is and three ODIs, and then directly to Zimbabwe, the players have faced a rigorous workload. He acknowledged that the transition has been difficult, noting that playing back-to-back matches is particularly taxing for the bowlers. With the series victory secured, Kishan emphasized that the immediate priority is recovery, including adequate sleep and nutrition, to ensure the team can give their best effort in the final T20I on Sunday.

"There were a lot of thoughts going in whether we wanted end up getting 250 or 230, or whether the wicket was just about getting 170 to 180 runs. So we had that in mind when Shreyas Iyer came in. We wanted to build a partnership and take the innings deep. I think we executed it in a very good manner."

"I don't give so much focus on what's happening outside," he said. "I know the way I have to play. What's important is to, just be in the moment, not think about what's going on in the outside world, who is getting more, thinking about that this guy is hitting more. Everyone can have that image in the team. But at the same time, as a No. 3 batter, if two wickets are down, you need to understand what's important. Do you keep taking chances or do you build a partnership? Is it easy to hit? You need to understand the wicket and play accordingly."
