The inaugural edition of the European T20 Premier League (ETPL) is scheduled to commence on August 26, featuring an opening encounter between the Rotterdam Dockers and the Amsterdam Flames. The tournament will span 26 days, utilizing two primary locations: the Voorburg Cricket Club in the Netherlands and Malahide in Ireland.
This six-team competition will consist of 30 matches, with each side playing the others twice in a double round-robin format. The structure of the tournament dictates that the top-ranked team will advance directly to the final, while the second and third-placed teams will compete in a Qualifier to determine the second finalist. The first 15 league matches are slated for Voorburg, after which the competition will shift to Malahide for the remainder of the league stage, the Qualifier, and the final. Travel days are scheduled for September 7 and 8 to accommodate the transition between the two legs. During the league stage, double-headers will be held, with the first match beginning at 11.30am local time and the second at 3.15pm local time.
High-profile international players are set to participate, including Steve Smith, Ravichandran Ashwin, Faf du Plessis, Glenn Maxwell, Heinrich Klaasen, Mitchell Marsh, Lungi Ngidi, and Trent Boult. Several cricket legends have expressed their enthusiasm for the new venture as co-owners of the franchises. Steve Waugh, co-owner of the Amsterdam Flames, stated that the opening match is a fantastic opportunity to showcase the brand of cricket his team intends to play. Rahul Dravid, co-owner of the Dublin Guardians, noted the excitement of representing Dublin in Europe's newest franchise league, while Matthew Hayden, co-owner of the Glasgow Cosmic, described the ETPL as a landmark moment for Scottish cricket.
