Massive wildfires currently ravaging parts of France and Spain have forced more than 300,000 people to flee their homes and holiday accommodations, seeking refuge in emergency shelters. Amidst the crisis, which has already claimed one life in eastern Spain and prompted further evacuations near Bordeaux and Madrid, health experts are raising alarms about the significant dangers posed by wildfire smoke.
According to Anses, the French health safety agency, fires consuming vegetation release a hazardous mixture of gases and particles into the atmosphere. The most dangerous components are fine particles, which are capable of penetrating deep into the human lungs. The pollutants include carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and various volatile organic compounds such as acrolein, formaldehyde, and benzene. Furthermore, the smoke can become even more toxic if the flames consume buildings or vehicles.
French pulmonologist Bruno Crestani, who leads the Respiratory Health Foundation, emphasized that the impact of smoke is not limited to immediate respiratory irritation. While those closest to the fires are at the highest risk, wind can carry these pollutants over long distances, affecting populations far from the blaze. Crestani warned that these fine particles can enter the circulatory system, potentially triggering serious health events such as heart attacks, strokes, or diabetes. He specifically highlighted that vulnerable groups—including infants, the elderly, those with pre-existing respiratory conditions, and asthmatics—are at the greatest risk of having their health status destabilized by smoke exposure.
The threat is global in scope. In December 2025, The Lancet reported that wildfire smoke exposure was linked to an estimated 154,000 deaths worldwide during the previous year due to fine particulate matter. In France, the charity Oxfam has estimated that air pollution from wildfires contributes to approximately 2,800 early deaths annually. The World Meteorological Organization also noted in September 2025 that wildfire-related pollutants can travel thousands of kilometers, citing instances where smoke from Canadian fires affected air quality in Europe in 2024.
Firefighters face an especially complex set of risks. Beyond the direct dangers of battling flames, they are exposed to smoke, heat stress, dehydration, and exhaustion during follow-up activities like monitoring extinguished areas and clearing debris. Contaminated equipment and vehicles further extend their period of exposure.
To mitigate these risks, French Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu has committed to distributing 1.5 million FFP2 masks to the Gironde region. While experts like Crestani note that masks do not provide 100-percent protection, they are considered a useful tool. For those in areas not currently under evacuation orders, health agencies recommend limiting outdoor activity, keeping windows and doors closed, draping wet cloths over air vents, and disabling automatic bathroom ventilation systems. Individuals who experience breathing difficulties or other symptoms are strongly advised to seek medical attention immediately.
Because these particles are so fine and light, they can end up being carried long distances, to affect people well away from the fire zone.
In zones that have not been evacuated, Anses advised people to limit their time spent outdoors, and to keep windows and doors shut. Any air vents should have wet cloths draped in front, and automatic bathroom ventilation should be turned off.
