Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has officially become the longest-serving head of government in the history of the Italian Republic. According to the ANSA news agency, Meloni reached this milestone on Friday, having served 1,413 days since her inauguration on October 22, 2022. This duration surpasses the 1,412-day record previously held by Silvio Berlusconi’s second government.
In addition to this national record, Meloni is now recognized as the longest-serving prime minister in the postwar history of the republic. The occasion is set to be commemorated on Friday in the southern port city of Bari, where local reports from the Italian daily Il Sole 24 Ore suggest that tens of thousands of people are expected to participate in a celebratory event. Due to these large crowds, security measures are being heightened amid concerns regarding potential protests.
Meloni’s political party, Brothers of Italy, marked the occasion by releasing a promotional video that highlights her tenure's achievements. The video utilizes the slogan, “The most stable government, the strongest Italy,” to characterize her nearly four years in office.
Addressing the milestone on the social media platform X, the Prime Minister framed the record in terms of national stability. She stated that such a duration is “not a record to flaunt” but rather a necessary condition that empowers a country to effectively plan, make decisions, honor its commitments, and command respect on the international stage.
