Calls are circulating across France for the 'Gilets Jaunes' or 'yellow vests' to return to the streets and roundabouts. The movement, which gained prominence in 2018 and 2019, is being urged to mobilize once again on Saturday, October 17th, to protest against the rising cost of living and, specifically, increasing fuel prices.
Local groups are organizing these demonstrations in dozens of towns and cities, including Paris, Marseille, Nantes, Toulouse, Montpellier, and Grenoble. In rural areas and smaller towns, organizers are calling for protesters to return to roundabouts to register their discontent. Other locations where mobilization calls have been issued include Angers, Bordeaux, Clermont-Ferrand, Dijon, Lyon, Lille, Nice, Perpignan, Rennes, Saint-Étienne, Strasbourg, Tours, Nîmes, Reims, Le Havre, and Mulhouse.
The original Gilets Jaunes movement was a decentralized, citizen-led effort that began as a protest against a new fuel tax before expanding into a broader expression of frustration regarding tax rates, political representation, and general economic hardship. While the movement saw massive demonstrations during 2018 and 2019, it gradually lost momentum after President Emmanuel Macron introduced a series of concessions. By the end of 2021, calls to demonstrate were attracting only a small number of participants.
Because the current calls are organized on a local level without a national structure, it remains difficult to predict the scale of the turnout or the potential for disruption. In Paris, police confirmed that no official notice for a demonstration has been filed. Authorities noted that the legal deadline for filing such notices typically ranges between three and 15 days in advance, depending on the size of the event.
