Reflecting on her connection to the area, 18-year-old fan Carys Edwards noted that the singer consistently made an effort to return to her Welsh roots and engage with her local supporters. Born Gaynor Hopkins in Skewen, Wales—a town located roughly 7 miles from Swansea—Tyler was raised in public housing as the daughter of a coal miner, growing up alongside three sisters and two brothers. Her humble beginnings eventually led to a globally celebrated career, anchored by her 1983 chart-topping power ballad, "Total Eclipse of the Heart."
The iconic track, which has garnered over 1 billion streams, saw renewed popularity during recent solar eclipses in 2017, 2024, and again this week. Beyond this signature hit, she was well-known for classics such as "It's a Heartache" and "Holding Out For a Hero," which featured on the "Footloose" film soundtrack. Over her career, she received three Grammy nominations and represented Britain at the 2013 Eurovision Song Contest, where she finished in 19th place.
