Emergency responders were dispatched to the Capitol Hill residence of Senator Lindsey Graham on Saturday, July 11, following reports that an individual was experiencing chest pain. Around 8:30 p.m. ET, emergency personnel were dispatched to Graham’s home in Capitol Hill following a report of someone suffering chest pain, according to audio on the Broadcastify website, which archives public safety radio feeds. Audio recordings indicate that emergency personnel later conducted CPR on a man suffering from apparent cardiac arrest.
According to the audio, a dispatcher noted that an unidentified woman, who was traveling to the home from Baltimore, had placed the initial call. While the caller believed the residence was unlocked, responding emergency crews found the door deadbolted and received no response to repeated knocking. Consequently, the dispatcher requested assistance from the Metropolitan Police Department to gain entry to the property.
Emergency personnel reported that CPR was in progress shortly after 8:50 p.m. ET. While the audio did not identify the senator by name, one responder made reference to a 73-year-old man; Senator Graham was 71 years old. Graham’s office has stated that he passed away following a “brief and sudden illness,” though an official cause of death has not been released.
President Donald Trump, who had recently spoken with Graham by phone, commented on the timeline during an interview on NBC’s “Meet the Press” on July 12. “I mean, it must have been right after that because I understand the police, or whoever it is, came there about 7:30, 8 o’clock in the evening,” Trump said, adding that the two planned to speak again soon. Trump noted that Graham had just returned from a trip to Ukraine and mentioned feeling tired during their conversation. The President estimated that emergency responders arrived at the home shortly after their call, noting, “It could have been his last call.”
FBI Director Kash Patel issued a statement on X confirming that the FBI is assisting local authorities and has made all necessary resources available to aid in the situation.
Neither the dispatcher not the emergency responders identified Graham by name. At one point, an emergency responder referred to a 73-year-old man. Graham was 71.
