United States President Donald Trump has formally requested that FIFA president Gianni Infantino facilitate another World Cup tournament in the country while he remains in office. This request follows the conclusion of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which was co-hosted by the USA, Canada, and Mexico. That tournament, which featured an expanded 48-team format, set a new record with a total attendance exceeding 6.8 million spectators.
The 2026 event concluded on July 19 in New Jersey, where European champions Spain secured a 1-0 victory over Argentina in extra time. Substitute Ferran Torres provided the decisive goal in the 106th minute. President Trump, who attended the final to present the trophy during the medal ceremony, expressed his desire for a quick return of the event to American soil. Addressing Infantino, Trump suggested that FIFA should announce the USA as a host again, perhaps staggering future announcements to manage public reaction, but insisted that the country must host another tournament during his tenure.
Because the hosts for the next two editions have already been determined, the earliest the United States could potentially host the tournament again is in 12 years. Beyond his request for the tournament, reports indicate that President Trump is interested in seeing Gianni Infantino, who has led FIFA since 2016, succeed Antonio Guterres as the next Secretary-General of the United Nations. Such an appointment would require approval from the 15-member UN Security Council, which includes the United States as one of the five veto-holding members. Notably, the U.S. president was awarded the inaugural FIFA Peace Prize several months prior to the 2026 World Cup.
