Chelsea have completed the signing of 22-year-old Valentin Barco, who joins the club from Strasbourg as part of a significant squad overhaul led by new manager Xabi Alonso. Capable of playing as both a left-back and a midfielder, Barco brings previous Premier League experience to the team, having spent time with Brighton three seasons ago. He initially joined Strasbourg on loan from the Seagulls in 2024 before making the move permanent a year later, a period during which he played a role in the club's successful qualification for the Conference League.
Barco is well-known for his time with the Argentina national squad, specifically his involvement in their run to the World Cup final. During the semi-final against England, he was notably involved in an angry exchange with Jude Bellingham following exuberant celebrations in front of the opposing players.
His arrival is the latest move in a busy summer transfer window for Chelsea. The club recently confirmed the signing of veteran striker Danny Welbeck from Brighton, building on earlier acquisitions including Crystal Palace's Maxence Lacroix and Aston Villa's Morgan Rogers.
