Chelsea have officially secured the signing of veteran England midfielder Jordan Henderson. The 36-year-old joins Xabi Alonso's side following the confirmation last week that his contract at Brentford had been terminated, a move that came to light amid interest from the west London club.
Expressing his enthusiasm for the new challenge, Henderson stated that the size of the club and his admiration for the manager made the opportunity impossible to turn down. He highlighted how impressed he was by the ownership's ambition and commitment to steering Chelsea toward success. Regarding his personal contribution, Henderson noted his focus on giving his absolute best every day, both on and off the pitch, to support his teammates and the squad as a whole.
Henderson, who boasts 91 international caps, brings significant experience to the team, having previously won the Premier League and Champions League during his tenure at Liverpool. His career path since leaving Anfield in 2023 has included stints at Saudi club Al-Ettifaq and Ajax, before he returned to the Premier League last year on a two-year deal with Brentford. During the 2026 World Cup, he was part of the England squad, though his tournament was limited by a broken arm.
The arrival of the veteran midfielder follows Chelsea's recent acquisition of Danny Welbeck from Brighton. The club has been active in the transfer market, having spent a British-record £117 million ($157 million) to bring in Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa, alongside signings of defenders Maxence Lacroix and Marco Palestra. Chelsea, who finished 10th in the Premier League last season—one point and one place behind Brentford—are currently preparing for their league opener against Fulham at Craven Cottage on August 24.
