Archaeologists working at the historic site of Pompeii have successfully unveiled a partially reconstructed frescoed ceiling vault, which once adorned a banquet hall in the ancient city destroyed by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79. The discovery was presented during an international workshop focused on recent excavations and restoration efforts at the UNESCO World Heritage Site.
According to the archaeological park, the ceiling originated from a banquet hall located on the upper floor of a residence that was connected to a bakery. To facilitate the reconstruction, experts utilized an innovative method involving a curved support structure designed to replicate the original shape of the vault. This framework allows for the placement of recovered fragments, and the park noted that as additional pieces of the frescoes are discovered and restored, they can be integrated into the existing scene.
The artwork primarily depicts scenes from Greek mythology, with researchers identifying the central theme as the union of Dionysus and Ariadne, a prominent narrative in classical Greek myth. The presentation of the vault served as a highlight of the recent academic gathering, underscoring the ongoing efforts to preserve and interpret the ruins of one of Italy’s most significant tourist destinations.
