An Amazon cargo plane accident at Miami International Airport has resulted in at least five deaths and five injuries after the aircraft overshot the runway on Sunday. The incident forced the closure of all runways at one of the busiest airports in the United States, as emergency crews responded to the crash site where the plane struck multiple vehicles, sparking a fire and sending plumes of smoke into the sky.
According to Miami-Dade County officials, the five injured individuals include three people in critical condition and two others who were hospitalized with less severe injuries. It remains unconfirmed whether the pilots survived the crash or if all the deceased were inside the vehicles struck by the plane.
The aircraft, a Boeing 767 operated by Amazon Prime Air, had arrived in Florida from San Juan, Puerto Rico. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reports indicate the plane overran the runway during the mid-afternoon. Visual evidence from social media showed the aircraft resting near a road beside two parked semi-trucks. Despite being engulfed in flames and emitting plumes of smoke, the plane appeared to remain largely intact on its underside.
The cause of the crash is currently under investigation, and authorities have not yet determined whether weather conditions were a contributing factor. At the time of the incident, the National Weather Service recorded thunderstorms and wind gusts reaching up to 48 kph in the area.
