Pakistan top-order batter Abdullah Fazal is facing an extended period on the sidelines following a lower back injury. According to an official statement from the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), the 23-year-old sustained the injury during a training session on Thursday at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy, the scheduled venue for the first Test against the West Indies.
Following an MRI scan and a subsequent clinical assessment, the team's medical panel confirmed that Fazal will require a period of rehabilitation. Consequently, he has been ruled out of the entire duration of the upcoming Test series against both the West Indies and England. The PCB has yet to announce a replacement player for the squad.
Fazal had quickly become one of Pakistan's most promising talents since his debut against Bangladesh in May. He demonstrated his potential by becoming the team's highest scorer in his debut Test, contributing half-centuries in both innings. His form remained strong leading into the current tour, as he recorded unbeaten scores of 50 and 48 in a recent tour match against a West Indies Select XI, effectively cementing his place as a starter for the opening Test.
His absence is expected to pave the way for middle-order batter Awais Zafar to make his international debut. Zafar had originally been called up to the squad as a replacement for Saud Shakeel, who was excluded due to fitness issues. Additionally, Imam-ul-Haq, who sat out the recent Test against Bangladesh, is now projected to reclaim his position as an opener alongside Azan Awais.
This injury represents a significant setback for Fazal at a pivotal stage in his career, as he was poised to build upon his early success during these two high-profile away series. Following the conclusion of the two-Test series in the West Indies, Pakistan is scheduled to travel to England to compete in a three-Test series.
