A monitoring plane operated by the non-governmental organizations SOS Méditerranée and the Humanitarian Pilots Initiative discovered 11 decomposing bodies in the sea off the coast of Libya on Friday. The NGO described the discovery as a "harrowing scene," noting that some of the remains were still clothed while others were kept afloat by tire inner tubes.
The bodies were located approximately 57 nautical miles, or 105 kilometers, from the Libyan coastal city of Zuwarah. Because the site falls within Libya's search and rescue zone, the Italian coast guard stated it had been notified of the discovery and had informed the relevant Libyan authorities.
In a statement regarding the incident, SOS Méditerranée characterized the sighting as a "stark reminder of the human consequences of Europe's deadly policies of indifference and deterrence-at-all-costs."
Data from the International Organisation for Migration highlights a significant rise in migrant fatalities within the central Mediterranean throughout 2026. During the first four months of the year, 821 people were reported dead or missing, marking a 111% increase compared to 2025. More than half of these deaths were attributed to severe weather conditions in January. Despite these rising mortality figures, the total number of migrant arrivals on the route dropped by 46% to 8,577 over the same period. Additionally, the EU border agency Frontex reported that total irregular border crossings into the European Union fell by 26% in 2025, totaling nearly 178,000.
