President Recep Tayyip Erdogan marked the 25th anniversary of Türkiye’s governing Justice and Development (AK) Party on Friday, declaring that the movement’s most significant achievements remain ahead. Speaking at an anniversary event held at the Capital National Garden in Ankara, Erdogan characterized the occasion as a “very special, historic day,” noting that the party has fundamentally transformed the nation since its inception in 2001.
Reflecting on the party's origins, Erdogan stated, “AK Party was born 25 years ago as the hope of our nation.” Founded on August 14, 2001, following his tenure as the mayor of Istanbul, the party rapidly altered the political landscape of Türkiye. Throughout its time in power, the organization has delivered extensive projects and investments across sectors including the economy, education, transportation, and health, while fostering a sense of national confidence.
The AK Party’s electoral performance remains unprecedented in the history of Türkiye’s multiparty era, which dates back to 1946. Over the last quarter-century, the movement’s political journey has produced two presidents and four prime ministers through a consistent string of election victories. Erdogan attributed this longevity to the voters, explaining that the party has utilized the resources and mandate entrusted to it to strengthen and develop the country. Furthermore, Erdogan was unanimously re-elected as chairman at the party’s Founders' Board meeting.
Addressing the future, the President dismissed suggestions that the party should reduce its momentum. “We have accomplished great things over a quarter century, but it is not finished,” he told the crowd. “No one should expect us to get tired.” Emphasizing that the movement is “just getting started,” he reiterated the party’s commitment to guiding Türkiye toward its long-term goals for 2053 and 2071, telling supporters that there is still significant work to be done.
