The Netherlands has officially appointed former Barcelona manager Xavi as its new head coach. The 46-year-old has signed a four-year contract, marking his return to management for the first time since his departure from the Catalan club in 2024.
Xavi, who famously lifted the 2010 FIFA World Cup as a player with Spain, will oversee the Oranje through their upcoming UEFA Euro 2028 and 2030 FIFA World Cup cycles. His coaching journey began in Qatar with Al Sadd, where he enjoyed a successful tenure following the conclusion of his playing career at the same club.
Reflecting on his new role, Xavi expressed a deep personal connection to the Dutch style of play. "As someone who received his training at the Barcelona academy, with strong influences from Johan Cruyff and Rinus Michels, among others, I feel a special connection to Dutch football," Xavi stated. "You could say that I am a bit of a son of Dutch football."
The new coach also highlighted the impact of Dutch figures on his professional development. "Other great coaches, especially Louis van Gaal, under whom I made my debut at Barcelona, and Frank Rijkaard, also played an important role in shaping me as a player and coach," he added.
