Arsenal have officially announced the signing of Brazilian midfielder Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle United. The 28-year-old, who spent four-and-a-half seasons with the Magpies, has committed to a long-term contract at the Emirates Stadium. This move marks a significant addition for the Gunners, who are coming off a historic season that saw them end a 22-year wait for a top-flight English league title.
Guimaraes represents the most high-profile arrival for Arsenal this transfer window, joining fellow newcomers Illan Meslier and Christos Tzolis. Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta expressed enthusiasm regarding the signing, noting, "With Bruno joining us, we are further strengthening the heart of our team." Berta highlighted the player’s versatility, stating that he can function effectively as both a defensive midfielder and a box-to-box presence, consistently contributing with goals and assists. According to Berta, the acquisition will allow manager Mikel Arteta to evolve the team's playing style and enhance internal competition for major trophies.
While the transfer fee remained undisclosed, Newcastle confirmed it ranks among the top 10 highest fees ever received for a player aged 28 or older. The move marks the culmination of a long-standing interest, as Guimaraes had been linked to Arsenal back in January 2022 before moving from Lyon to Tyneside. During his time at Newcastle, he made 195 appearances and scored 31 goals, notably helping the club end a 54-year major trophy drought by winning the 2023 League Cup under then-manager Eddie Howe.
Reflecting on his departure, Guimaraes described it as one of the toughest decisions of his life, stating, "I fell in love with this place. I really mean that." His exit follows the departure of Eddie Howe, who stepped down last week and was replaced by German coach Matthias Jaissle. At Arsenal, Guimaraes will compete for a starting spot in a crowded midfield featuring Declan Rice, Myles Lewis-Skelly, Martin Zubimendi, and Mikel Merino. Arsenal are set to face Manchester City in the Community Shield next Sunday before opening their title defense against Coventry five days later, while Newcastle begin their campaign against Liverpool on August 23.
