US President Donald Trump confirmed on Tuesday that he was removed from Air Force One during a visit to Turkey last month. According to reports, the operation involved an extraordinary level of subterfuge. While Air Force One departed as a decoy, the president was hidden inside an airport catering container to be transported to a separate, smaller government aircraft. He then traveled from Turkey to the United Kingdom before eventually reboarding the Qatari-gifted luxury jet he had used to arrive in Turkey. This specific aircraft had previously drawn attention for lacking the advanced missile detection and countermeasure systems standard on older presidential planes.
Addressing reporters after returning from an event in Ohio, Trump downplayed the complexity of the situation, noting that he had little choice but to follow the instructions of his security detail. Regarding the threat, Trump stated, “I guess there was a threat out there. I didn’t really ask too much about it. I get a lot of threats.” He further dismissed any personal fear, adding, “I don’t worry about anything, to be honest. Whatever it is. You know my attitude? Whatever!”
The president also addressed concerns regarding the safety of the staff and media personnel who remained on the original plane. He suggested that the aircraft he was moved to was actually at greater risk than the decoy flight. During the trip, when asked about potential danger at the time, Trump had brushed off the speculation by telling reporters, “If I go, you go. Right?”—a comment that overlooked the reality that the president would not have been on board had the primary plane been targeted.
