On Tuesday, the 26-year-old confirmed his arrival back in the city by posting a selfie on his official Instagram account with the caption: “Back in sunny Manchester!” His return comes just in time for Manchester City’s upcoming FA Community Shield clash against Arsenal, scheduled for Sunday, August 16. Haaland, who has been a standout performer since moving to the Etihad in 2022, is coming off a season where he secured his third Premier League Golden Boot with 27 goals.
The striker’s profile has grown significantly, with his Instagram following surging from approximately 40 million to 76.7 million during the World Cup. As he integrates back into the squad, discussions regarding club leadership have emerged under new head coach Enzo Maresca. The Italian manager has ruled out Haaland as a potential captain, citing a tactical requirement where the captain must approach the bench for instructions immediately after a goal is scored.
Maresca explained that he finds it difficult to envision Haaland in the role, stating, “If Erling is the captain, f—— hell — we have a problem, can you imagine?” The manager noted that he currently manages with three or four captains, with Rodri still recovering from back surgery.
