Progressive New York congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, 36, has announced her decision to freeze her eggs, revealing that she will be documenting the experience online. In a series of Instagram stories posted this weekend, Ocasio-Cortez explained that the choice is a personal measure to gain more control over her life. She noted that she had been saving for the procedure for an extended period, pointing out that there is a significant lack of accessible information for women considering fertility treatments.
Reflecting on the broader need for reproductive awareness, Ocasio-Cortez emphasized that women are often left unprepared for various stages of their lives, including puberty, pregnancy, perimenopause, and menopause. She stated, “As women in general, we are not taught about our bodies, we are not prepared for our own lives, whether that is in puberty, whether that is in pregnancy, whether that is in perimenopause, menopause, whether that is in so many different aspects of our lives.”
Balancing the medical process with her responsibilities as a congresswoman has required careful coordination. During her Instagram updates, she showed viewers the medical supplies involved, such as alcohol wipes and syringes, while noting that the process typically requires injecting medication over a period of 10 days or more. She shared that she would be administering her injections in the dressing room before a scheduled ABC interview on Sunday. “I want you all to see that,” she said, adding, “Because women can do anything. And I think it’s badass that I’m gonna be giving myself shots in the green room, get my glam on, roll out, talk international events, domestic policy, elections, pop out, live my life, do my thing.”
Before performing an injection on her abdomen, she joked about the potential for an "ASMR egg-freezing channel," telling her followers not to be "weird" about the process. After successfully completing the injection, she remarked, “That wasn’t so bad!” Ocasio-Cortez further discussed her decision during her appearance on ABC on Sunday. Her announcement has received support from various figures. Amanda Litman, co-founder of the political action committee Run for Something, expressed gratitude for the congresswoman's "honesty & vulnerability" on X.
